What started as a Victorian craze for fashionable dogs on the fireplace mantel became signifiers for married women to warn lovers away by placing the dogs facing away from each other on a windowsill (thus warning the lover that the husband was home).
Now we just love them because they are insanely charming! You can find many variations at antique shops but I just love these black & white babies with their golden embellishments.
